13+ Art & Design

Year 9 entry

We offer scholarships to forward thinking, curious students who relish creative challenges. They should have a strong visual vocabulary and the ability to provide solutions to creative problems.

The Art and Design Department offers scholarships across both disciplines, and students will need to specify either an art or design pathway during the application process. 



The programme will provide scholars with:

  • Exclusive development time with Art and Design teachers

  • Access to tailored talks and workshops

  • Specific machine training

  • An annual exhibition in the school gallery

  • No charge for any standard materials

  • Complimentary department trips and visits.

  • Termly Scholars Group Session 

  • Termly mentoring with senior member of the department

  • Option to attend the Art & Design Department once a week in the evenings

  • Annual report to parents 

 

Expectations:

  • Involvement in mentoring younger pupils.

  • Expected attendance at Art & Design events 

  • Demonstrate engagement, punctuality and passion for your subject

  • Model Monkton values of humility, service, confidence & integrity within the life of the school

 


 

Preparing for Assessment

Application deadline: Friday 15th January 2027

By this date you will have submitted your e-portfolio to Admissions for your chosen discipline within Art & Design (please see below for the specific requirements of each discipline).

The format should be Powerpoint, Google slides or PDF

 

Art
  • Up to date sketchbook

  • 5-10 pieces of sustained work from the last 18 months

  • A visual diary: a personal visual diary in sketchbook form, that looks at a specific area over a period of time. For example it could be a series of sketches, photographs, detailed drawings etc of a part of a garden or an interesting interior. This must be entirely the candidate’s own work.
     

Design

Your portfolio should:

  • contain 5-10 pages of sustained work from the last 18 months

  • Illustrate creativity and flair


 

Scholarship Assessment Day

Assessment date: Tuesday 26th January 2027 

Art

  • Candidates will undertake a drawing exercise in the art studio, for approximately 2 hours
  • Interview with the Head of Art and Design
  • Interview with the Principal
     

Design

  • Candidates will solve a design problem, through drawing and/or basic three  dimensional modelling
  • Interview with the Head of Art and Design
  • Interview with the Principal
